TRADITIONAL FORMAT + NEW TECHNOLOGY
May 17, 2012 by dgv

RESOLUTE embraces new lighting technology; we strive to provide the most pleasing illumination quality possible while remaining respectful of energy efficiencies, user operation costs, and environmental/disposal considerations.

As new illumination technologies adapt to the familiar Edison-base screw-shell format, the ability to intelligently adapt a single fixture to diverse lighting applications increases significantly.

The Edison base screw-shell format is now available in four illumination technologies:

Standard Incandescent

Incandescent lamps provide rich light quality, excellent “comfort” (warm) color rendering and controllability.  Incandescent offers what is generally considered the most aesthetically pleasing light but it is the least energy efficient. Because of the energy penalty, the incandescent lamp is slated to be phased out. Other options follow.

Screw-shell CFL

The screw-shell CFL lamp with integrated ballast offers a relatively long operating life and is energy efficient.  Self-ballasted lamps do not perform to the level that dedicated “four-pin” CFL lamps do, but late generation types like the Sylvania Mini-Twist produce pleasant light efficiently at a good value. There are few dimming options for screw-shell CFL lamps however. Fluorescent lamps contain small amounts of mercury, creating disposal issues.

Halogen

Halogen is a form of incandescent technology; halogen lamps are 30% more efficient than traditional incandescent lamps. A halogen gas replaces the inert gas in a standard incandescent and the lamp is run at a higher filament temperature. At this high heat, the tungsten burning off the filament combines with the halogen gas and is re-deposited on the filament in a repeating cycle — dramatically extending the life of the filament. This allows for a smaller filament, further improving performance especially in aimed applications. Special quartz glass is used for the “bulb” to withstand the higher heat. Dimming control is straightforward and effective. Lamp life is longer than traditional incandescent but shorter than fluorescent.

LED

New LED technology offers the longest life span and best energy efficiency. LED is mercury free and provides better color rendition than CFL. While more expensive than CFL, it is less prone to flickering.  Achieving good all-around light from LED sources has been challenging. While the technology offers the best balance overall, it has performed poorly in decorative applications. Latest generation screw-shell LED, like the Sylvania Ultra LED A19 Omnidirectional, promises substantial improvement in this area. LED generally offers excellent dimming control, screw-in versions presently dim adequately. LED has the highest up-front cost but long life and energy efficiency offset that over time.

We thought a visual comparison of incandescent, CFL and LED technologies would be interesting.  We photographed three of our fixtures, Box, Markee and Otto, using a standard A-lamp incandescent, a Sylvania Mini Twist and a Sylvania Ultra LED A19 Omnidirectional.  Other conditions remained constant.

Top to bottom: Box – Imago shade, Markee – aramid shade, Otto – opal white glass.
Left to right: Incandescent, CFL, LED.

NEW ADDITIONS TO SMITH
Feb 28, 2012 by dgv

RESOLUTE welcomes two new members to the SMITH family of fixtures: SMITH 24 and SMITH 36. The new sconces bring the versatility of BOX to the more aggressively-priced shade design of the SMITH family.

Uncompromisingly resilient, SMITH 24 and 36 feature double-layer shade construction: XOREL, an extremely hard-wearing woven polyethylene fabric from Carnegie Fabrics, is backed by a sheet of high-impact co-polymer.  The fixtures are fully enclosed on all sides; the shade fabric is inherently anti-bacterial and easily cleaned; the shade design is optimized for fluorescent illumination.

RESOLUTE now offers ten in-stock XOREL fabric options. COM selections from the full range of nearly 400 XOREL colors and patterns are easily accommodated.

SMITH 24 and 36 are available in dimming and non-dimming versions. Both versions meet ADA design guidelines; fixtures can be mounted horizontally or vertically.

The SMITH family includes pendant, rigid drop, ceiling, wall, table, and floor assemblies — as system of configurations and components conceived to meet the lighting needs of almost any setting.

My internship at Resolute
Mar 21, 2011 by Johanna Bengtsson

I’ve started my internship at Resolute and it’s amazing how many different thoughts come to my mind about the business of lighting and what this business means in terms of quality, diversity and the will of creating beautiful and inviting spaces.

My name is Johanna and I will follow Resolute’s work through a four month long internship. I am from Gothenburg, the second biggest city in Sweden in Scandinavia, but for the last four years I have been studying in Lund at its world known university.

Last year I completed my bachelor degree within fine arts and started right away on a two year masters.
The reason I ended up in another continent within a fairly small Seattle-based company is due to a fellow Emily Carr student who’s a good friend of mine. After a field trip around in Seattle to various companies, he got the idea that Resolute would be a fitting host company for my internship. Trusting the judgment of my very dear friend, I sent an email, got a reply, and one phone call later everything was set.
After months of struggling with a visa and finding the perfect place to stay, the plane finally departed in early February from Copenhagen.

Coming to a company in a country with a different language and culture, compared to where you are originally from, opens your eyes to differences and similarities. When arriving at Resolute, my first impression was that they care about thinking smart in everything from planning, design, production, packaging, transportation and methods. My expectations were not too positive when it came to the responsibility within American companies due to the picture of America that people in Scandinavia mostly are familiar with.My preconceived notions, however, are changing and a more positive attitude is starting to take form, both thanks to Resolute and the overall mentality in Seattle. Resolute follows what, to me, is the Seattle spirit of being curious and searching for what is new, interesting and better.

At Resolute, everything is important from saving prints to planning the production in a responsible way for both the employees and the environment. All factors are considered equally including price, aesthetics, quality, and functionality. The design process weighs all these factors and the end result is better for it.  As an industrial designer, working with the beauty of creating and at the same time considering the contradicting facts of the consumer society, I enjoy working with Resolute due to their way of approaching these questions.

I realized that thinking about responsibility, transparency, and clarity have been around in the company from the start. This is very impressive since this way of thinking is very modern. Resolute seems to develop its thinking and evaluate what it has done and plans to do with great efficiency.
It’s refreshing to be at Resolute where its design process takes place and hear the concerns and struggles to make supportable decisions regarding material usage, choices within production as well as packaging, transportation, and light source options.

Resolute works in a collaborative and experimental way. Since the different departments within the company work closely together and have organized their facility in a way that encourages collaboration, the design process is very dynamic and always encourages discussions. So, in joining Resolute for, four months I do not just take part in the design within the company but can share thoughts with all different departments especially design, marketing, and production.

Coming from Sweden as a novice within the design business and green from university, there are many new situations to face. Learning the technical terms within the lighting business and the process of producing lamps is a very specific knowledge. For me, the most important part of my internship at Resolute is the exposure to another culture and experiencing their structure of work and the work site. Also, taking part in the dynamic society of Seattle with its mixture of nationalities, food, and opinions. It’s an interesting time and I look forward to sharing my insights with you over the next couple of months on the Resolute blog and on facebook as well!

Cheers!

Hello!
Oct 4, 2010 by Holly Finn

Greetings Everyone,

I’m excited to announce the launch of our new website!

This past year has been a busy one for RESOLUTE.  We traveled to Slovenia to establish a new source for our glass lights and we were absolutely blown away by the results.  The quality is amazing and we consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have found another source for glass that measures up to our high expectations.

We’ve also spent a lot of time reinventing our current line and adding new designs to our PAPER LIGHTS, KNOLL TEXTILES, RESOLUTE and SOLUTIONS collections.  As if that wasn’t enough, we’ve also added new hardware options to our Solutions System.  On most models you’ll also find fluorescent and dimming fluorescent where it’s appropriate.  All of this will enable us to respond quickly and efficiently to your individual project needs.  If you don’t find exactly what you need in our standard catalog, please contact us and we’ll work with you on the perfect option.  We welcome the challenge and look forward to hearing from you soon!

Enjoy the new site,

Holly and Team RESOLUTE
