Seattle Children’s Hospital

New Addition  - Seattle, Washington

Four elevator lobbies in the new 8-story 330,000 sf addition to Seattle Children’s Hospital feature an assortment of three custom five and six foot diameter light fixtures from Resolute.

A gloss white powder coated metal ring supports a Spandura fabric diffusion disk; inside are six dimming 14W T5 mini-bipin base linear fluorescent lamps.  White 3 mm Sintra (PVC) top panels limit upward glow.

The lighting concept was proposed by ZGF Architects.

The top two floors of the new hospital building will house a new cancer wing, the sixth floor adds critical care beds connected to the existing critical care unit by a sky bridge; the third floor offers and auditorium and other patient services; the emergency department will be housed on the first floor.  Remaining floors will be built out over time.

ZGF designed the new facility with a “neighborhood” concept that puts caregivers closer to the point of care.  Clusters of eight rooms provide family-centered care; rooms are larger to accommodate families and are furnished with sleeper sofas, privacy curtains and bathrooms with showers.  Traditional nurse’s stations are replaced with spaces for caregivers to meet as a team to talk about diagnosis and treatment.

The facility is expected to open in Spring 2013.
